Closed, Right, Sacroiliac Luxation and Fracture of the Sacrum

Signalment and History

A 4-year-old, castrated, male Pomeranian weighing 10 kg was presented on referral following a motor vehicle accident. The patient had been administered pain medication and an antibiotic.

Patient Assessment

The patient was quiet, alert and responsive but nonambulatory in the pelvic limbs and was painful on manipulation of pelvic structures. The body condition score was 8/9. There was sensation to the medial and lateral pelvic limbs digits, tail, and anus. Complete blood count and serum chemistries were within normal limits. Thoracic and abdominal radiographs did not reveal pulmonary contusions and the diaphragm was intact. The abdominal wall, bladder, and cranial pubic tendon could be visualized as normal. There was a laceration in the left inguinal area that was clipped and thoroughly lavaged followed by placement of a wet-to-dry bandage. Despite his stable condition, the patient sustained severe trauma and could have been run over by the vehicle.
